Sinopsis: Siam, en el año 1943, cientos de prisioneros de guerra británicos están trabajando en el llamado ’Ferrocarril de la muerte’. Tiene lugar entonces una discusión entre el coronel japonés Saito y el británico Nicholson, que no está dispuesto a permitir que sus oficiales construyan un puente sobre el río Kwai. Pero el cruel trato que reciben por parte de Saito les obliga a aceptar. Desde ese momento, este asunto se convierte en una obsesión y una cuestión de amor propio para Nicholson. Mientras tanto, el Estado Mayor Británico da la orden de volar el puente.
